I root for them in the A.L, but when they play the Mets, I always root for the Mets.

Growing up, you didn't follow the A.L in my neighborhood...unless you wanted your ass kicked.

My dad was a Yanks fan, so I followed them in the days of Roy White, Horace Clark, Mantle, etc.

I had a ball with the entire 69 team's autographs...Mantle included. My dog ate it in the early 80's.

Just before sports memorabilia became precious.

Nobody beats Marge Schott, ex owner of the Cincinatti Reds.

They took her team away from her after it was determined that she was a genuine Nazi racist. Actually, she was suspended for 2 years, and then she sold the team the following year.

Watching a game from on high, she once referred to two of her black outfielders as 'million dollar niggers'.

Quite the characters, these owners
I'm not surprised.

The whole 'national pasttime' crap is demeaning and insulting to the intelligence of anyone with a conscience. The priorities of a society who puts this shit on a pedestal and pays a king's ransom to its players reveals its intelligence AND character deficits.

I believe it was cable t.v. that started the trend of bloated salaries.

Cable had the money to buy the rights to air the games. Network couldn't compete. Then, the player's union decided that they deserved a much larger share of the pie.

Couple that with the handful of whore owners, who would pay anything to put a winning team together, and you have today's sports salaries.

Like OPEC, the owners couldn't organize. If they would've collectively refused to pay these crazy salaries, the salaries wouldn't exist.

At one point, even though the Yankees were winning championships, I believe they were losing money at the gate.

I guess we do have our priorities screwed up in this country. We value our entertainment more than we value intelligence.

My family had two baseballs, with the '54 Yankees team on it. Some other family member stole it. Hope it was stolen from them.

I must whole heartedly disagree. Virtually every culture has elevated the athlete. From the ancient Greeks to the Mayans, sport was culturally significant.

Baseball is the national sport. It was played by Union and Confederate troops. Is the game flawed? Of course it is, always has been, just like our nation is flawed. And was from the very beginning, that doesn't mean you discard it. It means you change it for the better.

And I think perhaps you don't appreciate 1948 and what it did for this nation. It made 1964 possible.

Music, and sports. Two things that broke down barriers in this country.

Odd how it takes entertainment to showcase the fact that there is value to be found in every culture.

I've been rewatching Baseball by Ken Burns. Highly anticipating the 10th inning in September.

Truman desegregating the military had alot to do with it too.
